Slavery was a big problem in the time of David Livingstone.  The slaves were not treated well and were not in good condition.  They were beaten and traded to mainly American or English owners.  They were sold without a say in what they were to do and some didn't even speek the language.  Livingstone helped to keep many slaves safe by converting them to Christianity.  At the time many governments in other countries had srong beliefs on the trade of Christian slaves.  Many thought that people who were Christian could not be used for humanly purposes.  Later after Livingstone returned to Europe, he spoke out against the slave trade changing many people's minds.

Slaves were badly beaten and when they tried to run away they were killed.  They were not fed good or housed well.  They usually ate things they grew in the fields raw.  They were usually housed in a barn for large numbers, or in small shacks.
